（一）边沟是指路基边缘的排水沟，主要用以汇集和排除路基范围内和流向路基的小量地面水；排水沟是将边沟、截水沟、路基附近的积水排到桥涵处或路基之处的天然河沟里的水沟。

（二）边沟一般设在挖方段，排水沟一般设在填方段，边沟一般为矩形，排水沟一般为梯形。
